Islamic Wedding Gift Ideas: Quran Verses and Calligraphy for a Nikah

A wedding gift with meaning outlasts the mehndi lights and the walima menu. Calligraphy of a Quran verse or a prophetic dua hangs in the couple's first home and quietly reminds them, every day, of what their marriage is built on. With wedding season in Pakistan running through the cooler months, here are the verses couples choose most often and how to pick a piece they will love.

The verse most couples choose: Ar-Rum 30:21

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Ar-Rum 30:21)

Three words in this verse describe the marriage every family prays for: sakinah (tranquillity), mawaddah (affection) and rahmah (mercy). Calligraphers often paint the phrase mawaddatan wa rahmah on its own as the centre of a composition, which keeps the piece elegant and easy to read from across a room. See the Arabic text, transliteration and display ideas on the Mawaddatan wa Rahmah page.

A dua for the couple and their family: Al-Furqan 25:74

“And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous."” (Al-Furqan 25:74)

This dua closes the description of 'Ibad ar-Rahman, the servants of the Most Merciful, at the end of Surah Al-Furqan. It asks for spouses and children who are qurrata a'yun, a comfort to the eyes, which makes it a prayer the couple can make together for the family they will build. Read it in full on the Rabbana Hab Lana page.

Short and striking: An-Naba 78:8

“And We created you in pairs” (An-Naba 78:8)

Only a few words in Arabic, this verse suits minimalist homes and works beautifully as a pair of matching canvases, one for each spouse. See the Wa Khalaqnakum Azwaja page for the Arabic and display ideas.

The Prophet's ﷺ dua for newlyweds

Abu Hurairah reported that when the Prophet ﷺ congratulated someone on their marriage, he would say: “Barakallahu laka, wa baraka 'alaika, wa jama'a bainakuma fi khair” — “May Allah bless you, send His blessings upon you, and bring you together in goodness.” It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud (2130) and Jami' at-Tirmidhi (1091). Written on the gift card, or painted as calligraphy, it turns a present into a prayer.

Other meaningful choices

  • Bismillah — “In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.” A blessing over a new home and a new beginning. See Bismillah.
  • Rabbana Atina (Al-Baqarah 2:201) — a dua for good in this world and the next. See Rabbana Atina.
  • Ayatul Kursi — many families hang it in every new home. See Ayatul Kursi.
  • The couple's names in Arabic — one composition with both names, or two matching canvases. Preview names in five calligraphy styles with the Arabic name generator, and see more ideas in the Arabic name gift guide.

Choosing the right piece

  • Size: above a bed or sofa, choose artwork about two-thirds of the furniture's width. The size guide has room-by-room measurements.
  • Palette: gold on black or navy is timeless; blush and gold feels softer and more romantic. If you do not know the couple's colours, a neutral background with gold is the safest choice.
  • Timing: a commissioned piece has to be painted, dried and delivered, so order a few weeks before the nikah or walima. For a gift needed sooner, choose a ready-to-ship piece from the wedding gifts collection.
  • Presentation: tick “This is a gift” at checkout to add your message and have the parcel packed without prices.

Gifting Quranic text with respect

A verse is not ordinary decoration, so it helps to gently suggest a good place for it: a clean, respected room, securely fixed, and never in a bathroom. Our guide on hanging Quran verses summarises what scholars have said.
