Can You Hang Quran Verses on the Wall?

One of the most common questions from families choosing Quranic calligraphy — what scholars have said, and how to display sacred text with respect.

The short answer

Scholars have differed on this question. Many fatwa institutions consider displaying Quranic verses permissible when it is done to remember and learn from the Quran, and when the verses are treated with respect. Some scholars discourage it. InkByHand is an art studio, not a fatwa service: this page summarises published answers so you can make an informed choice, and we encourage you to ask a scholar you trust.

What scholars have said

Permissible, with reverence

Darul Iftaa Birmingham, answering according to the Hanafi school, writes that if verses are hung “with the intention to remind the people of the Quran, the message of the Quran and to teach the people about the specific verse such as Ayatul Kursi, then there is no harm in that.” The same answer cautions against hanging them purely for decoration, to display an expensive frame, or for show, and asks that reverence be shown in that room.

Darul Iftaa Jordan, answering according to the Shafi'i school, states that it is permissible to inscribe Quranic verses or hang them in frames, and that it is obligatory to honour and protect them from any offence or degradation.

A classical caution

Both answers cite al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah (5/323), which records that some earlier scholars hoped the practice was permissible while others considered it disliked (makruh), out of concern that the verses could fall and be stepped on.

Contemporary views that discourage it

IslamWeb (fatwa 90983) notes that contemporary scholars differ. Those who discourage the practice argue that seeing verses constantly can dull reverence for them and that it was not the custom of the early generations; those who allow it see the verses as a reminder of the Quran. The same fatwa advises against hanging verses in places of disobedience.

Etiquette when displaying Quranic calligraphy

  • Keep the intention to remember and reflect on the words, not to show off the frame.
  • Choose clean, respected rooms — living rooms, entrances, studies, prayer corners — and never bathrooms.
  • Avoid spaces where music, arguments, or other disobedience are common.
  • Fix the artwork securely so it cannot fall; check hooks and wires once a year.
  • Hang it at or above eye level, away from where it could be splashed or knocked.
  • Dust it gently and keep it in good condition; if a piece becomes damaged, ask your local mosque about respectful disposal.
  • Read the verse and its meaning — the Verse Library has the Arabic, transliteration, and translation for popular verses.

Choosing a verse and a place

Ayatul Kursi and the Four Quls are often placed near entrances or in family rooms; Rabbi Zidni Ilma suits a study; Surah Rahman's refrain suits a dining or living room. The size guide helps you choose dimensions so the lettering stays readable from where you will sit.
