Handmade or Printed? 7 Ways to Tell an Original Islamic Calligraphy Painting

Search for Islamic wall art and you will find canvases at every price. Many of them are printed on canvas, often as giclée or UV prints. There is nothing wrong with a print — it is an affordable way to bring a verse into your home — but it should be sold and priced as one. When a listing says hand-painted or original, these seven checks help you know what you are buying.
1. Look for real texture
Paint sits on top of the canvas. An original shows ridges where the brush moved, layers built up in some areas, and places where the bristles lifted. A print shows the canvas weave evenly across the whole surface, with no relief of its own.
One caution: some prints are brushed over with a clear gel to imitate brushstrokes. In a genuine painting the raised areas follow the letters and shapes; on a texture-coated print the glossy strokes often ignore the design underneath.
2. Use raking light
Hold your phone torch almost flat against the surface and look across it. On an original, strokes cast tiny shadows and the sheen changes between matte and glossy areas. A print reflects light evenly, like a photograph.
3. Check the edges and sides
Hand-painted canvases often show paint carried around the edges, small brush marks at the corners, or pencil guidelines near the margin. Prints usually have clean white sides, a mirrored or stretched copy of the image, or an image that stops with a perfectly straight line.
4. Look closely at the letters
Zoom in with a magnifier or your phone camera. Printing leaves a regular pattern of tiny dots or inkjet spray; paint is continuous colour with occasional brush hairs and slightly uneven edges. In calligraphy, look at a letter that appears more than once: painted by hand, each one differs a little, and ink gathers where a stroke ends. Printed letters are identical every time.
5. Check the gold
Real gold leaf is laid in thin squares, so you can often see faint seams and overlaps, and its crinkled surface flashes as you move past it. Metallic paint shows brush texture. Printed “gold” is usually a flat yellow-brown that does not shine at all. Our article on gold leaf in Islamic calligraphy explains the difference between real and imitation leaf.
6. Compare listings
An original painting is one object. If the same image appears in many shops, in every size, available in unlimited quantity and ready the same day, it is almost certainly a print. A reverse image search of the product photo will often show where else it is sold.
7. Ask for proof, and check the price
A seller who paints by hand can easily send a short video of the piece under side light, close-ups of the edges, and a photo of the back. Price is a clue too: a painting that takes days to make cannot sell for the price of a print. Our price guide for Pakistan shows what original pieces typically cost.
Is a print ever the right choice?
Yes. For a rented flat, a child's room, or a tight budget, a good print is sensible. Just pay a print price for it. An original is worth more because it is unique, shows the artist's hand, and can be made with your chosen verse, colours and size.
