GuideArtwork Care Guide
Handmade calligraphy is made with materials that respond to environment and handling. This guide explains how to display, clean, frame, and store your InkByHand piece so it remains in good condition for years.
Display and environment
Where you hang or place your artwork has the greatest long-term effect on its condition. Ink, paint, and paper are all sensitive to light, moisture, and temperature changes.
- Avoid direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure causes ink and pigment to fade gradually. Position the piece on a wall that receives indirect or ambient light rather than direct sun.
- Keep away from moisture. Do not hang calligraphy in bathrooms, above kitchen sinks, or in rooms with high humidity. Steam and moisture will cause paper to warp and can cause inks to run or bleed over time.
- Avoid heat sources. Hanging close to a radiator, fireplace, or heating vent accelerates deterioration of both the paper and the surface medium.
- Stable temperature. Frequent temperature changes cause paper to expand and contract. A room with stable, moderate temperature is ideal.
Cleaning and dusting
- Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or a clean, soft-bristled brush. Work lightly and do not apply pressure.
- Never use liquid cleaners, sprays, or damp cloths on an unframed piece. Moisture will damage the surface.
- For framed pieces, you can clean the glass with a slightly damp cloth — ensure no liquid runs into the frame gap and contacts the artwork.
Framing recommendations
Framing protects the artwork from dust, handling, and environmental exposure. If you plan to frame your InkByHand piece, consider the following:
- UV-protective glass significantly slows ink and pigment fading compared to standard glass. It is particularly valuable for pieces displayed near windows.
- Acid-free mat board prevents the mat from yellowing and transferring acidity to the artwork over time. Ask your framer specifically for acid-free or conservation-grade materials.
- Leave a gap between the glass and the artwork surface. Direct contact between glass and ink or paint can cause sticking or surface damage over time.
- Sealed backing helps prevent dust and insects from reaching the artwork from behind.
Storage
If you need to store the artwork rather than display it immediately:
- Store flat in a cool, dry location — not in a basement or attic where temperature and humidity fluctuate.
- Place acid-free tissue or glassine paper between the artwork surface and any cover material.
- Do not stack heavy objects on top of stored artwork.
- Keep the artwork in the original packaging if possible — it is designed to protect the piece during transit and storage.
Handling
- Hold at the edges — avoid touching the artwork surface directly with your fingers. Oils from the skin can affect the surface medium over time.
- Support the full piece when carrying it — do not hold by one corner or allow the artwork to flex or bend.
