Is Acrylic Paint Waterproof? Don’t Make This Mistake

Acrylic paint is water-based, which allows it to dry quickly. It is created by combining pigment and acrylic polymer emulsion. That explains why acrylic paint dries so quickly. Acrylic paint is popular because of its quick drying time. It is also reasonably affordable to buy.

Is acrylic paint, however, waterproof? No. It is water-resistant to some extent but not waterproof. So it would be best if you sealed the paint to make it more water-resistant, and depending on the surface you are using, you may need to prepare that surface ahead of time.

However, this does not make it waterproof. A glass of water or a few drops of rain from the sky can still damage your artwork. When acrylic paint is wet, it absorbs any water that comes into contact with it. When the paint dries, it becomes somewhat water-resistant.

Even if the paint becomes water-resistant, it will still chip or peel. To ensure the longevity of this new look, take extra precautions to seal your things.

Acrylic Paint Fundamentals

The acrylic paint dries quickly due to the water-based acrylic polymer emulsion. The water evaporates, allowing the paint to dry. However, what exactly is acrylic paint?

Acrylic resin: often known as a binder, separates the pigment and holds it to the surface once dry. Essentially, it holds everything together.

Pigment: The color of your paint, which is in the form of a powder and requires something to assist it do its work.

Water: Water serves as a liquid base for the binder and pigment.

We have already addressed whether acrylic paint is waterproof when dry. What if you intend to paint your shoes? The same idea applies; you will need to apply a finish and gloss to waterproof the shoes.

Is Acrylic Paint Used Just for Paintings?

Acrylic paint is utilized on a variety of surfaces other than canvas.

Acrylics can be used to improve various materials, including wood, plastics, flexible vinyl, ceramics, and glass.

Because it is so versatile, this form of paint is popular among many individuals. It can be blended with additives such as pastes, powders, and gels to achieve a matte or glossy finish.

You can personalize any item by modifying how it appears. Because of its versatility, acrylic paint is ideal for a variety of crafts. It will generally work nicely on any non-oily item. (Sarode, S.C., Sarode, G.S., Patil, S., Mahajan, P., Anand, R. and Patil, A., 2015)

Why Is It Necessary to Waterproof Acrylic Paint?

Because acrylic is a water-based paint, it can be thinned with water.

A considerable amount of water could destroy your piece if you do not make it waterproof. Any goods that will be kept outside must be waterproofed to protect them from rain and dampness.

Acrylic paint has a porous texture. It will gradually absorb water through the small pores. You won’t even realize it’s occurring until it’s too late and ruined.

How Do You Waterproof Acrylic Paint?

To make acrylic paint waterproof, you’ll need a sealer, such as a varnish.

In the art field, spray sealers are the most widely utilized. The sealer will shield the acrylic paint finish from the outdoors.

I like to use either an acrylic sealer or a varnish to seal my acrylic paintings.

Plaid Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer is my favorite acrylic sealer. It’s simple to use, and its spray sealer makes it even simpler to cover the entire job in a thin coat. You can apply numerous coats without issue, and the sealer will remain clear even after several coatings.

A varnish is another option for sealing your acrylic paints. This is the method to use if you wish to seal painted wood. However, varnish can be used to seal any other painted project. I would suggest Gamblin Gamvar Varnish. It is a gloss varnish used to coat wood and a variety of paintings, including acrylic paints. Varnish spray is also available. It will greatly simplify the application of the varnish.

It will be unable to absorb water through the pores. This will help your stuff last longer.

To achieve the greatest results, use a water-based sealer first, followed by an oil-based sealer layer. You can apply a drying oil to your object to give it an extra seal.

Make sure to allow it for at least three days to dry properly. Your artwork will be stunning, long-lasting, and secure.

Waterproofing your Canvas When Using Acrylic Paints

Canvas comes in a number of sizes, with the majority of them already primed. If your canvas has not been primed, you can use a Gesso Primer. Allow drying after application. You can then use acrylic paint to finish your artwork.

After that, spray your artwork with a UV protection solution to safeguard it. For example, you can apply Krylon UV-Resistant Clear Coating to keep your piece from fading in the sun. Allow for drying before proceeding. After that, apply multiple coats of outdoor polyurethane to protect the entire canvas.

Apply to all sides and allow to dry before applying another layer. You now have a weatherproof canvas that you can hang outside or indoors.

Waterproofing Acrylic Paint on Glass

Let the glass dry for at least 24 hours after painting it. The paint can then be set by doing the following:

Cooking in the Oven

Place the painted glass object in a cold oven, then heat it to 350 °F (approximately 180 °C). The glass warms up gently while the oven heats up to prevent it from breaking. Set a timer for 30 minutes after the acrylic glass or enamel paint has reached temperature.

Set about 45 minutes for acrylic paint combined with a glass medium. Remember to read the directions on the product label.

After the timer goes off, turn off the oven and let everything cool before removing it from the oven. Turn on the extraction fan and open the oven door to get rid of any smells. Wait another 72 hours once everything has cooled before washing your glass item gently by hand.

Air Drying and Other Techniques

Another way to set the paint is to let it air dry for 21 days. If an object is too large for the oven, use a hairdryer set on low heat and held approximately two inches away. You may also dry the painted item in the sun.

Waterproofing Acrylic Paint on Metals

Acrylic paints attach well to flat surfaces. Therefore metal is an excellent choice for painting. You may paint a lamp base, doorknobs, or metal picture frames, among other things.
